Coral reef erosion: In situ measurement on different dead coral substrates on a Caribbean reef

چکیده

Widespread mortality of reef-building coral substantially reduces the capacity for reef growth and makes available extensive bare substrate areas that in absence recovery will be eroded by a variety external internal bioeroders. Here, we analyze rates erosion on six different types carbonate substrates under situ conditions over 2-yr period. We measure vertical changes surface elevation four species recently dead corals afflicted stony tissue loss disease outbreak, other two common calcareous substrates, long-dead Acropora palmata fronds hardground, as reference “bare” occur widely Caribbean reefs. The colonies experienced significant after 2 yr exposure, but at depending species. Dead skeletons Orbicella faveolata greatest −9.9 mm (±3.2 mm); Dendrogyra cylindrus −3.6 (±2.8 mm), Pseudodiploria strigosa −3.3 (±3.7 Siderastrea siderea −1.2 (±0.9 while remained unchanged. There was presence parrotfish grazing scars short algal turf mats, crustose coralline algae cover sand-and-high mats were not associated with elevation, arguably indicating protective effect. This study provides new insights into how what is shaping contemporary reefs fine spatial temporal scales.

Fluorescence-Based Classification of Caribbean Coral Reef Organisms and Substrates

A diverse group of coral reef organisms, representing several phyla, possess fluorescent pigments. We investigated the potential of using the characteristic fluorescence emission spectra of these pigments to enable unsupervised, optical classification of coral reef habitats. We compiled a library of characteristic fluorescence spectra through in situ and laboratory measurements from a variety o...

Island biogeography of Caribbean coral reef fish

Aim The goal of our study was to test fundamental predictions of biogeographical theories in tropical reef fish assemblages, in particular relationships between fish species richness and island area, isolation and oceanographic variables (temperature and productivity) in the insular Caribbean. These analyses complement an analogous and more voluminous body of work from the tropical Indo-Pacific...

Hydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia

As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
